YOUR PROGRAMS

Childbirth Doula

This program will provide the skills to prepare students to begin a career as a Professional Childbirth Support Specialist (also known as “doula”,) a valuable component of the maternity care team. She is employed by a pregnant woman and her partner to provide professional support during the prenatal period and during labour and birth. Her training and expertise enables her to provide her clients with non-clinical emotional, informational, and physical support, advocacy, and facilitation of the birth experience. She meets with the woman or couple several times prenatally, goes to their home or hospital with them in early labour, and accompanies them throughout labour and birth. She also provides follow-up visits in the important early postpartum period, when most families are left alone.

Postpartum Doula

This program will provide the skills to prepare students to begin a career as a Professional Postpartum Support Specialist, trained in normal physical and emotional adjustment to birth and in infant care and feeding, who provides physical, emotional, educational, and practical home support to families after the birth of a baby. New mothers need physical care and nurturing, emotional comfort and reassurance as they process the events surrounding the birth, and guiding hand as they learn to adjust to the new role. Postpartum Care is needed to circumvent readmissions to hospital, breastfeeding difficultes, lack of attachment, marital strain, and postpartum mood disorders.

Perinatal Educator

A Perinatal Educator develops and delivers perinatal education programs to expectant parents. This program will prepare students to work as Perinatal Educators facilitating prenatal education programs in their community. Students will also be prepared to provide Childbirth Support, Lactation Support, or Postpartum Support to clients, or may use this training as a primer for applying to a Midwifery Program.
